Extreme Make-over: School Edition
Benefiting the Florida Center for Child and Family Development

Client Challenge:

  • The Florida Center for Child and Family Development, a nonprofit, community-based organization dedicated to the healthy development of children and families, was in desperate need to expand and improve upon one of its facilities. The 18-year-old building had become deficient in space and functionality for The Florida Center’s expanding needs.
  • The Florida Center conceived the Extreme Make-over: School Edition idea, and began soliciting donations from local businesses.

Goals/Objectives:

  • To add one additional preschool classroom to the Early Intervention Building.
  • To improve building functionality to better serve the students and clients of the early intervention preschool classroom and therapy services.
  • To make all facility improvements in two weeks time while students were on summer break.
  • To expand The Florida Center’s corporate partnership base by 20%.
  • To increase community awareness through print and electronic media sponsorship coverage.

KSC’s Solution:

  • KSC, Inc. and The Florida Center presented the concept to a local home builder, who decided to support the effort. Motivated by The Florida Center’s vision, the builders opened this project up to its subcontractors in the hope that The Florida Center would get more of their facility “wish list” needs met.
  • The idea was also presented to the local ABC-7 television station (home network of the original Extreme Makeover television series).  Excited about sharing the visual transformation with local residents, ABC-7 agreed.
  • To gain the support of the builders’ business partners, KSC, Inc. created an “ask piece” that outlined the scope of the project. Following distribution of this piece, subcontractors were invited to tour The Florida Center’s Early Intervention Building.
  • A total of twelve companies accepted the offer.  While plans for dividing work and materials were being made, more than twenty vendors who had heard about the project, either through the media or through word of mouth, requested to be a part of the project. Since there was enough work to go around, all vendors/subcontractors were welcomed with open arms.
  • In order to maintain excitement for the project, the demolition was scheduled as a day long event, which was kicked-off with a mini “pep rally” and covered by local media outlets, both print and television. Throughout the two week construction period, daily updates were provided to the media.
  • The “Big Reveal” took place in front of a crowd of more than 200 people, including community leaders, business partners and members of the media.

Results:

  • The Extreme Make-over: School Edition project met all of The Florida Center’s objectives.
  • The Center received media coverage in both print and electronic outlets.
  • Corporate partnerships were also expanded as evidenced through company donated materials and goods in excess of $187,555!
